Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he might improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly challenge each other. He had access into a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold'em.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
