Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he liked playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention more on poker.

The actual improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly wager against each other. He was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena ever. Howard relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
