Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's initial two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and focus even more on the game.

The real advancement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly wager against each other. Howard had access into some of the foremost players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of NL texas hold'em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. He moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
