Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly compete against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit texas hold'em.

Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
