Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player's hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It's the very same notion in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there's no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players trying for the high, along with a few trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
