Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's first 2 years were rough as he would play extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.

The actual advancement in his game began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge each other. Howard had access into several of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold'em.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
