Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he liked participating in various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's first two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and do not win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly challenge each other. He had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit hold'em.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
